A fire-rated steel and concrete frame with roll-down steel doors at its perimeter provides shelter for this guest house located high in the hills above Malibu California. Within this steel frame are two glass and wood modules for living and sleeping. In the event of a fire, or whenever the guest house is not in use, the doors can be closed creating a secure and fireproof enclosure. With the perimeter steel doors up the steel frame becomes a light and airy pavilion providing a setting for indoor-outdoor living. The living/sleeping modules are positioned within this pavilion to create protected outdoor living spaces of varying size. Circulation space is kept to the exterior to maximize the area of the livable space. On the roof are photovoltaic panels to generate electricity. A geothermal pump system will heat and cool the house as well as provide hot water. Currently in design.
